Bee SAFE writes RDNO re: Ag Survey

Bee SAFE's letter to RDNO asks, "Since RDNO has been made fully aware that continuing to support GM crops and their poisons is making people sick, is there another reason besides supporting the pesticide and GM industry that is preventing RDNO from acting on behalf of public health?

Mr. Kittel,

I am writing to you as a representative of the thousands of people who have supported Bee SAFE's request to RDNO to make RDNO GE FREE.  At least one hundred letters were received prior to Bee SAFE's presentation and many were from groups such as COABC and the Council of Canadians that represent hundreds of people. As well, over two hundred people showed up for Bee SAFE's presentation to RDNO with signs telling RDNO clearly that they want to be GE FREE.

Since RDNO still didn't seem able to decide, RDNO decided to put forth an Agricultural Advisory Committee made up of about 20 people. Despite the committee holding many meetings, with RDNO paying everyone for their commuting expenses (and time for those who are employed?) it appears the committee is still unable to advise. Thus you are now asking the population which way Agriculture in RDNO should be aiming?

As a representative of the people who counted on RDNO to make a decision, I must tell you that this latest move is perceived as either gross incompetence or cowardice on the part of our elected officials.  Here is our take on the situation:

1. There are approximately 25 families in RDNO who are growing GM crops and/or running factory farms (dairies)

2. There are at least 1,000 families who are running organic farms, organic market gardens, and/or dairies who are currently affected by GM contamination

3. The pollution from Roundup and the other pesticides used by the GM industry is making all of us sick by penetrating underground water, streams, the soil and the air, and has now been found even in mother's milk - this is now undeniably linked to numerous disorders and absolutely proven to be one of the most important Endocrine Disrupting Compounds around.

Mr. Kittel, no one is fooled by RDNO's comments that there are two schools of thought since it is very clear that one school - the industry - is paid to speak on its own behalf while the rest of us are speaking on behalf of the public good. Since RDNO has been made fully aware that continuing  to support GM crops and their poisons is making people sick, we are asking "is there another reason besides supporting the pesticide and GM industry that is preventing RDNO from acting on behalf of public health?" If not then this seems to us to be a conflict of interest on the part of people who are supposed to represent us, and if so, please let us know so we can address it once and for all.
